How long does it take to grow a beard?
The honest answer I give every client: a full beard takes most men 3 to 4 months, and a long, statement beard takes 6 to 12 months or more. Facial hair grows about 0.3–0.5 mm a day — roughly half an inch (1.25 cm) a month. The calculator above turns that into a real date for your exact goal, so you know whether your beard will be ready for the wedding, the holiday, or the winter.
I’ve been shaping beards for over 20 years, and the single biggest mistake I see is men judging — or worse, shaving off — a beard that simply hasn’t had enough time. Growth is slow and it is uneven. Knowing the timeline is what keeps you patient enough to actually get the beard you want.
The beard growth timeline, stage by stage
Every beard passes through the same stages. Here’s what to expect at each one — and what to do (and not do) as a barber would tell you.
Week 1–2: Stubble
The scruffy, slightly itchy phase. It often looks patchy, and that panics people. Do nothing. Don’t trim, don’t shape — just let it grow and use a little beard oil if the itch bothers you.
Week 3–6: Short beard
Coverage evens out and a real shape appears. This is when you do your first clean-up: set the neckline about two fingers above your Adam’s apple and tidy the cheek line. Leave the length alone.
Month 2–3: Medium beard
Now you have weight and presence. Start using beard oil daily and a boar-bristle brush to train the hairs downward, and book a shape-up every three to four weeks.
Month 3–4: Full beard
Thick, full, and commanding — where most men happily stop. Switch to a balm for hold and let a barber handle the shaping; the sides and bottom line are genuinely hard to keep symmetrical on your own.
6–12 months: Long beard & the yeard
Statement length. From here it’s about maintenance over growth — daily combing, oil twice a day, and trimming only the strays so all that length looks intentional rather than wild.
What affects how fast your beard grows?
The calculator lets you pick slow, average, or fast because growth genuinely varies. The main factors:
- Genetics — the biggest one by far. It decides your density, thickness, and how fast hairs push through.
- Age — facial hair usually thickens and fills in through your twenties and into your thirties. A patchy beard at 19 is often a full one at 29.
- Hormones — testosterone and DHT drive facial hair. This is why beards vary so much between men.
- Health basics — sleep, protein, and general nutrition support growth. They won’t rewrite your genetics, but running on empty won’t help.

How to use the beard growth calculator
Pick where your beard is now, the style you’re aiming for, and your growth speed. The tool works out how many months it’ll take and gives you the target date, plus the milestones you’ll hit on the way. If you’re not sure which final style suits your face, run the Beard Style Quiz first, then come back and time it.
The one rule that matters most
Don’t judge your beard before four weeks. The itch of weeks two and three is the number one reason men give up — and it’s temporary. Push through it, keep it clean and oiled, and let the calculator remind you that the finish line is closer than the mirror makes it feel.
